A Little Perspective On Investing In Yourself

Serious about making an impact..and commited to taking care of the mind and body God gave me. It’s an (imperfect) journey. Don’t wait another minute.

“My family comes first.”

Does that sound familiar? That was my line for years. And it’s still my whole-hearted commitment. But after nearly putting myself in hospital during my leadership journey in an unhealthy pursuit to be “in control”, I now have a renewed commitment and understanding of how important it is to invest in prioritizing my physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health.

And lest anyone be tempted to grab an eye-roll assumption that investing in oneself is a selfish outcome of the #MeToo movement, you’d be dead wrong.

The truth is that women who have a healthy, inspired view of investing in themselves are better at everything - parenting, working serving, loving, building businesses, solving local and global problems, protecting themselves and their families, friendships and more.

As my caregiving journey was coming to it’s most strained, emotional and raw fork in the road, I discovered quite by accident that I needed a series of biopsies and other medical appointments that left me feeling stunned and overwhelmed.

I felt guilty for even thinking about taking care of myself and yet I realized that if I didn’t begin to address my own health and wellness, I would be in no position to care for anyone.

You may be saying, “I don’t have time to take care of myself.” I understand, Sis. I do. Let me ask you a question…”By not taking care of yourself, what’s it’s costing you? Financially. Emotionally. Spiritually. Mentally.

‘‘Here’s the thing - self-care is a journey. And it starts with starting.’’

For me, I had never in my life taken a group fitness class. Money was tight so at the time, a gym membership was out of the question. I found a pay-as-you-go Zumba class, and despite worrying about leaving my mother’s side, I found a class that was taking place during the time my mother’s in-home nurse was with her. I asked my sweet play-brother Mark to go with me and or the first time in almost 7 years, I felt like I was punching cancer in the face with each uncoordinated, sweaty Zumba move. And I had never felt more alive!!

I went home with a mental clarity that reminded me that just because Mom was ill, did not mean I had to succumb to being ill. The best gift I could give my mom was taking care of myself. The financial investment of the Zumba class would grow into a gym membership and working with a trainer. Am I rich? Not by any stretch of the imagination. I am however committed to shifting my financial investment from medicines for preventable illnesses to physical, spiritual and mental health and self-development that helps me work and live better.
